Mid-America Science Museum in Hot Springs is home of one of the world's most powerful operating conical Tesla Coils, providing awe-struck visitors with a 1.5 million volt "Caged Lightning Exhibit." A smaller, but equally impressive 400,000-volt version of that exhibit is now making the rounds to schools across Arkansas.
Tesla Coil Exhibit Goes On The Road Again
Richard and Mary Ellen Mathias of Hot Springs Village, who sponsored and promoted the construction of the permanent Tesla Coil exhibit at Mid-America, have taken the show on the road with their "Sermon from Science" volunteer outreach program into schools. After an electrifying demonstration by Richard Mathias, Mary Ellen as "Professor Sparky" shares enlightening insights to inspire, encourage and challenge young people to discover their God given gifts, talents and abilities.
The program offers a concise look into the genius mind of Inventor Nikola Tesla --- the man who developed alternating current and dozens of other inventions. Life magazine listed Tesla in the "100 Most Important People in the Last 1000 Years." He occupied the 57th position cited as.... "(one of) the most farsighted inventors of the electrical age." They state his work on the rotating magnetic field and alternating currents helped electrify the world.
Since inception (2005), the Mathias' electrifying educational program, on behalf of the Mid-America Science Museum Educational Department has been shared with twenty-two groups including public schools, civic groups and professional organizations. More than 13,000 students and educators have witnessed to the Nikola Tesla story and seen the enthralling electrical demonstration of a 400,000 volt conical Tesla Coil (quarter-size replica of museums Caged Lightning - Tesla Coil exhibit).
